The problem is deludedness. If anyone is unhappy, it depends on deludedness. That person is seeking happiness in a way that does not lead to happiness. Deludedness is the natural state. Non deludedness is rare and never spontaneous.
Attack can destroy a lot. We know that. But there is also a sector called "they can not take that away". How big is this sector?
Around the year 1195, the big Buddhist university at Nalanda in India was attacked and destroyed. The ruins remain to this day. Most books were destroyed. Many individuals were killed. But some survived by going to Tibet, and they brought some of the books.
So they could not take away the Buddhist philosophy, even if they destroyed the whole university.
The Buddhist institutions in Tibet have been under attack since around 1950, but the Buddhist ideas are distributed and accepted in more countries than before.
