Reach mind 2

Clothes are material objects and they are also symbols. They have this double existence. In the old days the material quality was very important, but clothes have also been used for expressing personality and social status during history.
According to madhyamaka prasangika, mind is the most important aspect of clothes and of everything else.
To design clothes materially is obviously an art, and to make clothes that fit the minds of the global population is also an art.
Is there any difference if we stress the object side or the symbol side?
The mysteries of the mind are more of a challenge than the material issues. We can approach the mind in many different ways, through fashion, music, general knowledge and through pure analysis.
Fashion is for many associated with superficial layers of mind, while the philosophy analyses deeper layers.

Mind micro climate 2

The mind micro climate process means to take one question at a time, look at it critically and positively and seek for the best alternative. This is nice, natural and repeated many times daily for most of us.
The weak point in this is the question of relevancy. All micro issues feels very important - be they about what to eat for lunch, how to avoid nuclear bombs, choose tie, choose television program, diminish starvation, save the climate and whatever.
The smaller the question, the more relevant it feels. But it often is the other way around. There are bigger issues we should solve rather than the small ones.
The situation is much better now than before. The issue of peace is bigger than the issue of war, and in most of the world the bigger issue is accepted as the relevant.
On the physical level we can do little as individuals to solve the global problems, but on mind level our attitude is important. So the bigger issues are relevant for all of us.

Mind deceiving mind 2

Practically it is not that difficult to learn to change frequency for mind. The main problem is social. For our existence we are dependent upon this society, and we relate instinctively and desperately to this society. We want to understand the others, and we want to be accepted by the others. We want to be one in the team.
So we accept the rules of the team, independently of which these rules are. Many subcultures have very strange rules.
Every group has its standard frequency range. From this frequency range all is seen and evaluated.
This is the problem. Most groups and societies do not accept frequency change. It is like treason. For example, if a group use to meet at the pub every week, it is like treason if one of the members suddenly abstains from drinking beer.
There are some groups who do work with frequencies. They are traditionally small minorities. Hopefully, they can unite globally these days, as communication improve.

Disharmony vs imperfection 2

Imperfection is the normal state, and it needs a lot of patience. The time from seed to fruit is long.
If we lose confidence in the organic process, we create disharmony. In a situation of disharmony we try to do the best for ourselves, which often means creating more disharmony.
Disharmony and desperation are close. This can lead to extreme actions and inventiveness. But the results are not very stable, and the long term effects might be quite sad.
The problem seems to be that many individuals are not part of the organic processes. But this problem is much smaller now than it used to be. Not long ago, even nations seemed to be in serious problems. Now many of these problems have been solved within the borders of the nations in Asia, Latin America and even Africa.
So it is a question of organization. Some have too much to do and some too little. It should be easy to solve.
A difficulty is that it is a meta-problem. It is a problem about how to solve problems. But yet easy to solve. It is mainly a luxury problem.

Harmony and unity 2

In a world of unity, the ideal is not to throw out people but to find the best role for all within the unity. This can happen on different levels, where all have comparatively bad roles, or where all have the best possible roles.
What is a good role? It is difficult to say generally, as it depends on mind, and mind is individual and complex. What is good for one is bad for the other.
Traditionally, there were more people than good roles. This problem remains partly, but it is not as difficult as it used to be. Access to higher education has increased ten times - at least - the last 100 years. The number of company leaders, musicians, movie makers, media personalities and the like are comparatively higher than before.
We could arrange society so the demand for good roles gets even bigger. But it would mean some changes in the hierarchies, and that is a sensitive area.
So the progress towards a world where every individual can express his or her best ambitions is a bit slow.
But if we see the unity of the world, we will also see the harmony and thus also the ways to increase the harmony even more.

Tensionless enjoyment 2

To defuse tension does not mean to accept the unacceptable, but to deal with reality in a rational way. Difficult and drastic conflicts seem to call for intense and drastic action. But it is the other way around. Cool analysis is in particular need in difficult and drastic situations.
One difficulty is that some minds only accept physical arguments. Hitler is the great example. He ignored international justice and claimed he had rights over the territories occupied by German forces.
The tensions caused by this were immense, and impossible to defend in the long run. The normal, good state is as tensionless as possible.
The present conflict in Afghanistan is difficult to solve, as the will to reach a tensionless state is so alien for many inhabitants. The problem is not military or even social but on mind level. Military action might make the problem more difficult.

The most beautiful 2

The reactions that took place in the mind one second ago were unavoidable. Maybe they were nice so we wanted them. Or they were painful.
The reactions were decided by at least two groups of factors, old and new. New factors were the immediate impulses and processes going on now. We might be comparatively aware of these processes. Old factors are our knowledge and experience from before.
The combination of the new impulse and our old experiences made up the reaction we had a second ago.
This means that we are some sort of victim of our old experiences. Things that happened to us long ago still influence our outlook and our experiences.
That is the difficult aspect. We are not free now. We are followed by our history.
The positive aspect is that the past can be changed. Or rather, we can get a new past if we want to.
Nothing in mind has inherent existence, so all of it can change.
To change the past means to purify old, painful experiences and memories. It also means to fill memory with positive activities. Eventually, no old negativity can disturb our reactions in mind.
This is not a static situation. It needs constant renewal of good actions in order to remain.

Anger 2

Which is the greatest power for change? The world looks different now compared to only 200 years ago, and which are the causes that made it better?
There are two alternative powers, anger and equanimity. Equanimity is the quiet analysis.
Anger has been tried, in wars, and in the organised social conflict between capital and workers. Equanimity has also been tried, in the millions of minds trying to make things better, from cleaning the home to building space telescopes.
We have a romantic idea that anger is the best.
It might be different for different persons. If we can use equanimity - reason - for getting what we want we do that and there is no trouble.
If someone can not use argument, the raw will to change might manifest as anger. Eventually it will be organised within equanimity.
Anger is a spontaneous reactions in mind. When it is there it is a reality. But that does not make it justified or constructive.
Dealing with anger is not an easy task, however.

Better 2

Deceit, secrecy and violence might seem to be rational methods in a body-based world view. In the extreme form we see it in war fare strategy. In a disguised form we find it in many societies and many sub cultures.
In a mind-based world view however, the best methods are communication, openness, information and argument.
The body-based world view is the first one we find when we grow up. The mind-based view is not quite natural. It must be cultivated in order to be reached. But it can be reached by all.
Which is best? Well every individual must choose individually. It is no use saying that the mind-based view is better if no one tries to reach it.
There are some difficulties in seeking the mind-based view. One difficulty is self purification. Many stunts which are natural in the body-based view are quite sad in a mind-based view.
In a body based view we might think "I am not angry often. I am only angry when it is particularly justified". In a mind-based view, the principle is "When it seems and feels particularly justified to be angry, it is particularly good not to be angry".

Forming 2

A world described as made up by interrelated forms and fields is different from the normal idea of the world as a material earth where people and material objects are governed by power structures.
One advantage of the form-field model is that all of us inhabitants in the world can express ourselves freely. In a power-based structure maybe only one person per nation (like Stalin or Mao) has full freedom. In a materially based society it is very heavy to express oneself - a big house, a big car and millions of objects are necessary. The earth is too small for all of us to have all this.
In a form-field world we can use anything as a form. It can be material objects, but also actions, words and even thoughts.
As human beings, our great quality is our ignorance. It is our potential for learning. If we seek truth by practical experiments, we are likely to hurt ourselves and others.
If we instead use words and thoughts, we can try out more ideas for less damage. And eventually we can find our ideals, and thus create the best combination of form and field.

Reconstruction 2

Reconstruction of the true man is a mind process. If you would try to use bodily means as sticks and carrots, it will probably fail. Mind deals with truth, so information, communication, argument, analysis and openness should work.
Mind is also the scene for feelings and for energy tornadoes. They make the situation more complicated. But they should never lead.
Instead, we should try to find our deepest will, and then let it be supported by reason, feelings and energy.
Our mind is in constant change, as new information and new impulses are coming incessantly. At the same time, mind can be very stable. In order to reach a certain goal the person must be quite headstrong.
Everything is interdependent with everything else. Even the hermit is supported by the general interdependency. This is vital, but it should not be over used. The normal relation between people is positive neutrality. In a few places like prisons, the relations are not neutral, but these places should be as few as possible.

Almost poetry 2

The carnage revolution in Portugal 1974 ended the dictatorship. The weapons were defeated by reason and flowers - carnations. And so it is. History should be more of a poem about flowers and beautiful skies than about military campaigns and imprisonment.
It is a choice we can make. As all choices it should be supported by argument. The argument for non-violence is that it is true and nice.
The arguments against non-violence are in the genes, in our instincts, habits and history. So they merit a place in a museum.
The ideal of peace and solidarity is probably accepted and taken for granted by more individuals than before, but still there is under the surface a lot of insecurity.
The primary threat is in our own mind, in the form of conditioned concepts and unexamined assumptions.
We can dissolve them by analysis, but we can also make them stronger if we work for it.
There is a temporary attraction in conflict, but this attraction can be dissolved.

Unlearning 2

The brain has an ability to learn and to adapt to demands. That is good but also a difficulty. Once the brain has created a routine, it is so much easier to follow the routine than to do something new. As the external world is in constant change, we would need a new kind of brain which is more flexible and less emotionally stuck in its old routines and patterns.
You could say that the external world should change first. The brain is just a mirror of external situations, and as long as there is oppression, rudeness and hostility in the world it is good to have brains which react with disgust and even pain.
And certainly, we should change the external world in order to eliminate oppression and discrimination. One problem is that the negative ideas are born anew with every new generation. So the problem can not be solved once and for all. It has to be solved for every new individual that is born. And there is quite a number of those.
But to eliminate oppression is also a brain problem. It is not an external, political or psychological problem. The difference between the dictator and the democratic leader is in the brain.
Of course, the brain is part of an external reality. The internal reality is mind. The brain is a marvellous instrument in the hands of the mind (does the mind have hands!?) but a disastrous instrument when used for creating disaster.

Secrets 2

If we want to know the specifics in this universe, we have to know the specifics in every individual mind. And the content in the mind is under constant change. Evaluations can change from extremely positive to extremely negative some 60 times per second. It is a mess and a complex one.
This means that if we have some important message to communicate, we have to communicate it. We can not just hope that others will get it. There are billions and billions of messages out there.
Communication is more abundant than ever before, so the need for communication increases.
In old movies we see the secret agent in his hat and long raincoat under the streetlamp, watching out in the hope of finding the truth. These days we envisage the modern agents in front of their computer monitors following millions and millions of information pieces, in the hope of finding the truth.
Is it likely that the modern methods are more efficient than the old ones? The possibilities of making mistakes must be enormous.
We know - from Buddhist philosophy - that mind is the most important aspect of human beings, and mind works with communication, information and truth - that is no secret.

Subjective reactions 2

We can use mind for theoretical knowledge or for reality production, and happiness is an example. It is a difference between hearing a talk about happiness and to be happy. We want the real happiness, not just a theory.
Many ideas about becoming happy are quite lofty, including external reality, other persons and sometimes God or other powers.
But happiness is a mind-mind process. Unhappiness is also a mind-mind process.
So, how to be unhappy?
One efficient method is to see faults and problems, and blame others, God and whatever. The problem is not that we observe problems, but that we blame others. For example, being disappointed with God gives tremendous negative backlash.
In many cultures it is quite accepted to blame others. It is true that others often are a nuisance, but if we blame them we get problems ourselves. The negativity we assemble towards others is after all assembled in our own mind, and there it stays. It even grows and increases in power, and eventually it will burst and feed directly in our mind as the most extreme experience of unhappiness. That is not nice!
On the other hand, if we have a positive attitude towards others and try to solve even the most impossible problems, we get a potential for happiness. And when this potential matures we will experience real happiness.
If we know the power of mind, we can look out for all impulses to think, say or do negative things and stop them as fast as possible.

Deep satisfaction 2

Busy and active as we are, our life should be nicer than it is. Who is satisfied?
Even the most beautiful, young, sexy, rich, educated people we see in the television fiction are loaded with problems, disappointments, suffering, deceit, insecurity, violence, abuse and whatever. This is fiction, but it attracts viewers because it shows an underlying reality.
How many of the observations we make are true? Of all the impulses reaching our eyes, only a fraction makes it to our awareness. Most of the information is blocked by different filters, of which some were relevant some 10 000 years ago.
And the impulses we see are just fragments of form and color which our brain puts together into arbitrary structures which are colored by our own moods of fear, revenge, hostility, unrealistic dreams and all of it is evaluated by the question: is this good for me?
Nevertheless, we have the capacity to react very strongly, and often we compensate our lack of knowledge by resolute action. So worse gets worse.
Everything is not bad, of course.
Our basic life and life ambition is not soiled by the everyday difficulties, and we can return to this pure satisfaction by breaking the stream of thoughts just like that!

What is so special? 2

All the suffering and difficulties in the relative reality is proof of the power and specialness of mind. All problems depend on mind.
Hunger and illness are mind problems. Hunger used to be a tremendous problem, and as long as we tried to solve it manually by having a lot of people working in the fields, the effect was meager. Now when the problems have been solved by mind and the work is done by a few specialists and heavy equipment we can get the food we need.
So it is with everything. A lot of progress has taken place the last one hundred years, but many problems remain. One cause for this is that most people must start from the beginning when they are born. Their development can be extremely fast - traversing one million years of history in maybe ten years of life today - but it must be passed and a lot of dangers wait along the way.
We also have lingering problems between nations, religions, languages and other traditions.
If we focus on problems as external, concerning matter or energy, progress will be comparatively slow. If we see all problems where they are - on mind level - we might solve them faster.

The interrelated field 2

Are we different from cell phones? Well, cell phones can not adjust themselves. But can we adjust ourselves?
If we see ourselves as a fixed identity with a fixed body, we can not adjust. We are as we are.
But if we see ourselves as a field in relation to a body and mind, we have to adjust all the time. Noting is stable, nothing is given. Of course, we might decide to do almost the same thing today as we did yesterday, but it is the result of a fresh decision.
The organism we are given at birth is extremely complex. We should not try to change it lightheartedly. So in a way it is good that we do not see all our options.
But it is not good to limit our perspective artificially.
If we are a field - which we are - our identity is not necessarily in what we are now but in the ideal. We are like children, seeking our identity.
Also if we are a field, we can act in rational way. We change the field by changing the material situation and by study and practice - we knew that. If we see our self as a field we can be more daring and exact.

Fundamental nature 2

The full capacity of mind is farsighted, broadminded and spacious. This mind is locked into a world of limitation. To break out of the limitation and return to the limitlessness is not easy.
But there are many positive examples. Food production used to be limited. Now food is unlimited. The distribution of food is not yet unlimited.
Material things and gadgets used to be limited in number, if they even existed. Now cell phones, computers, cars and television sets are almost without limit.
Gender roles used to be very limiting, in particular for women. Many limits are weakened in the west, and in the east many women find a new economical freedom thanks to micro credits.
Not long ago a person was limited for life to the home village, now migration to the cities and the creation of new jobs have lifted these limitations.
Energy in the form of oil is a limited resource. New forms of energy are exploited.
Money used to be limited resource. Not it is unlimited, and more people than before are prosperous.
On mind level many limitations remain, in particular when we think about others. But at the same time we know that individual freedom is the most positive power, and that everything new feels strange as long as it is new.

Awareness awareness 2

When we use the same word twice immediately after each other we mean different things. So if we would say "awareness awareness" the first word, "awareness" means the awareness in our mind - the constant stream of thoughts and observations. The second word, "awareness" means the awareness of the constant stream of thoughts and observations.
So the first "awareness" is the object, the reality taking place in our mind. The second "awareness" is the subject, the "I" watching the stream of thoughts.
In all mind training, to learn to be aware of the stream of consciousness is a central thing. Different words are used as mindfulness, mental alertness, vigilance.
There is no reality if there is no observer at the same time. The best painting might be in the museum, but if you are not there you will not be overwhelmed by it. The best book might be in the library, but if you do not read it it will not give your life new meaning.
And so it is in our own thoughts. In order to reach the divine, we need the objective aspect - awareness of the divine in all its fantastic qualities - and also the subjective aspect - an awareness that appreciates the divine and all its fantastic qualities.

To be and not to be 2

The reality is in thought and name...
There are four names called the immeasurables. They are compassion, love, joy and equanimity.
Our understanding - our thoughts - of these words decide our quality of life.
These words can have negative meanings. Compassion might mean charity, where an inflated I throws a few coins to the others, the destitute and inferior ones.
Love can mean self love, or it can be very trivial as love for certain shoes and color shades.
Joy is negative when it is joy over the mistakes and shortcomings of others. Equanimity is negative when it is uncaring.
But the four names can also have very exalted meanings. Compassion can be the will to help all others to get rid of all suffering for ever. Love can include all. Joy can be the joy over success of others. Equanimity can be the coolness we need to see clearly always.
There is no other reality, than the reality in our thoughts when we define these words.

Mind refinement 2

In many western countries, the demographic situation is alarming. The number of elderly will be high and the number of younger will be low. In a global perspective, the population growth continues, however.
But will it be possible to take good care of the elderly in the future?
If we just wait and see, problems will be serious. We need to prepare. All who are getting older are included in this "we".
The best preparation is on mind level. All our experiences are produced by our mind. If we want nice experiences we can prepare for it long in advance.
We do it by purifying mind and doing good to others.

Thursday, July 9, 2009

Aftermath 2

A basic rule for having a nice life is to accept time, and let the past be past. But sometimes we can not leave the past and sometimes we do not want to leave the past. It is very good to use experiences in order to avoid faults and mistakes in the future.
Our mind is slow in processing our memories. A natural process is going on all the time. The result of this process will be suffering or joy. We are not aware of the process, but we can influence it if we try to.
The problem - which has caused suffering during the history - is the distinction between improving and destructing. if we can not make that distinction, we are likely to hurt ourselves rather than to improve the world.

Optimism

Buddhist psychology is extremely optimistic, in its trust in the ability for mind to change. We can even turn into Buddhas. This is in contrast to Hinduism, which led to the caste system.
Among the eleven positive sides of the human mind, two are of particular importance. They are non-ignorance and equanimity.
One very optimistic side in Buddhist psychology is that it assumes that all problems are caused by ignorance, and that all ill will is an expression of ignorance.
To root out ignorance is not a simple thing, as mind from the beginning is contaminated not only by false information and prejudices, but also is the victim of a constant deception caused by the senses and the feelings. However, all ignorance is adventitious. Mind itself can never be polluted.
Equanimity is needed in order to withstand the storms that can appear in mind when we sort out the bad and dissolve it.
Non-violence is the outcome of the positive sides of the human mind.
Buddhist psychology can be studied in books like Mind in Buddhist Psychology by Herbert V. Guenther & Leslie S Kawamura or on Internet at Tibetan Library org

Sour mind 2

The situation in our mind and the situation in the external world are very different. They follow different natural laws. We probably know more about the external laws than the internal.
Mind reacts with suffering when something is wrong in mind. But if suffering seems unavoidable, we learn to accept suffering rather than seek a remedy.
Often we misinterpret the suffering as caused by external factors, while the real causes are in mind. The real causes might be clinging and anger. Clinging and anger might be our most cherished reactions. We cling to the good and fight the bad.
Of course, we should seek the good and avoid the bad. But if we hold on too hard we destroy it, and if we fight too hard we destroy ourselves.

Safety first 2

Wild, deceptive and driven by old impulses...
Mind should be wild in the sense of reading anything without prejudice, but mind should not remain wild in the sense of anarchy.
Deceptive is the side effect of the best of the brain - our ability to learn is also our ability to see reality in a faulty way. The basic deception is giving too great importance to our observations. They are not as solid as they seem to be.
Driven by old impulses - living is not in the external now, but in the internal now - things that were initiated very long ago mature in our mind, triggered by external events.
We want instant social control, but we have to deal with this mind. It is a problem for all, and very much so for some individuals. The solution is integration for all, communication and mindfulness.

Thought and name 2

Openness or secrecy?
Traditionally we have lived in natural lack of knowledge - the universe has been a mystery in general and in specifics. Now we approach a new phase in history, fast increased knowledge and great increase in the number of individuals with clear mind.
So we can make a choice between relying on secrecy or openness. Instinct would say: preserve some secrets. Rationality says: openness is best for all and for all times.
In a time of change - as the present one - we might need rules of transition. But the transition must be to openness.
Openness is the only guarantee for freedom. All evil powers in the world has thrived on lack of knowledge. Will new evil powers emerge? The threat is constant. The antidote is one: openness. Transparency, as it is called.
In the ordinary civil society, it is obvious that to avoid conflict and friction, we need openness about rules and obligations for all citizens.
The society is in development. During the process, the distribution of the good and the bad is a bit arbitrary. How to handle this and avoid unfairness and conflict? Openness is the only thing that works.

We can do anything 2

Existentially we are responsible for our own actions. It is a nuisance. It would feel better if we could blame God or someone else. But we can not.
The world we live in is complex. What is good and what is bad? Maybe it is impossible to see the difference?
No, the difference is in our intention. If we will others good, it is good. If we will others bad, it is bad. If we consider the idea of good for me, bad for you, it is bad. But it is good to calculate good for you and me.
What are the prospects, can humanity as a totality grow up from a childish, irresponsible level, to a grown up responsible state? The prospects are good.

Brain and reality 2

The brain is normally very slow compared to reality at large. When fast reactions are necessary, as in playing tennis, a lot of practice is necessary. The slowness is a nuisance. But it also have advantages.
The main advantage is the ability to consider different alternatives. We can find new ways of acting and solving problems.
When we are born the brain is not fully developed, and even when the rest of the body is fully developed, the brain can develop further. The best way is probably the old well known and tedious one: study and practice.
In order to do this we need freedom of information. This freedom leads to communication and exchange of information in a never ending, positive process.
The alternative of trying to improve the situation by secret and devious means is not as good. Reality by itself and the normal functions of the brain are deceptive enough. We do not need to make reality more enigmatic.

Thursday, July 2, 2009

Mind and reality 2

One way to train our body is to let it meet the challenges which appear spontaneously. It is a rather bad way. Better is to prepare in advance for ordeals which might come up.
It is the same with the brain and mind. We can let them develop as a result of the challenges we meet spontaneously. But it is a rather bad way. Better is to prepare systematically in advance.
Do we need mind training? If the answer would be no, we certainly need mind training. Mind likes training but the brain hates it. For brain it is like pest to learn things by heart, for mind it is a pest not knowing things by heart.
But if the energy level increases in the brain, it also becomes eager to learn new things.
So the energy level is the key factor.
The first thing we need is the will to develop. Often we are tempted to remain in our prejudices.

Human potential 2

In these days, artists like Madonna and Britney Spears get a tremendous support from the industry they are part of (composers, choreographers, musicians, movie makers, sound and visual experts, media, commercial organisations, marketing and so on) so you sometimes doubt the importance of human potential. What is most important, the industry or the artist?
The answer is that human potential is the most important. This potential is not only expressed in and by the artist, but also by all others involved - composer, choreographer and all the others.
Our existential meaning as humans is to express this our potential. It is extremely strong, once we find our thing to do. Billions of people are blocked from doing their best ever, or they have to do it under very cramped circumstances, like hunger, bad education, illness and poverty.
Every new generation wants to do things in their way, a totally new way as they feel. So there is a natural conflict between generations.
However, if the older generation feels safe in its understanding of reality it has nothing to fear. The young ones will find the light, if they just are given the opportunity to look.
